Sneaky New York Turkey
by LeRoy Blowers Sr

The sneaky one of 2007! This is the story about the sneaky one that did not get away and that the advise to all to sit tight and wait. 2007 May 3rd I went out for the third day in a row after this Gobbler that would answer, but would not come in to any type of trickery in calling. The 3rd day he came in and walked around me and still would not come in so I tried moving to the field. (This would be my last chance at him because the weekend would bring more hunters out and then he would vanish until next year.) I set up inside the woods about 20 yards, I called and heard another one across the field gobble so I thought I would play both of them at the same time hopping that one would be moving in on the other. It worked the one across the field started coming in but would not come out in the field, so I kept playing them responding to both when needed. I then stopped calling and just waited, they knew where I was (I mean the hen) suddenly I saw some movement to my left side, I could not believe it the Gobbler that would not come in to my call the first two days was right in front of me 80 yards away and he was coming down the field closer and closer, 70ty, 60ty, 50ty, 40ty. Then he stopped and looked in the woods into my eyes, (so it seemed ) and I let him have the #5’s, he went down and then got up and ran 10 yards to get back in the woods by then I was standing up and giving him another load of #5, he dropped and I ran out of the woods and across the field to him and had to stand on his neck to finish him off. When I looked I was real pleased to see that he was the dominant Gobbler I was after the two days before. He had a 10+” beard, 7/8 inch spurs and was 22 lbs dressed out when I got him home.

Hunting Tips

Get Closer: Camo Your Face
If you want to get close to big game while using camo, one of the most important places is your face. I have found that if I go into the field with my "great white hunter" face, the game recognizes me, and flee. However with a good dose of face paint, so that I am no longer white the game may see me - but instead of fleeing, they look with curiosity. Try it.
