Korean Pheasant Hunt
by Elisse & Dan Clark

My husband and I hunted pheasant recently (March 2008) on Jeju Island, in Korea! Dan is US Army Retired, and had told me how he had hunted there when he was stationed in Korea many years ago... back when Jeju (or Cheju as it is sometimes spelled) was basically wilderness... Jeju Island is now a vacation paradise of 5-star resorts, but there is still hunting (even for foreign tourists!) at the Daeyoo Land Hunting Preserve! I was planning our very belated "Honeymoon" in Asia, and I was determined to finally get to go hunting with my husband!

The website information was only in Korean, but with the help of the wonderful staff of the JW Marriott in Seoul, I was able to reserve us flights to Jeju and set up a day of hunting there - and, as Dan did get us a pheasant (see below - all I managed to shoot was skeet plates!), we even got to eat it for lunch (yummy pheasant sashimi, grilled pheasant, pheasant dumplings... all washed down with great white wine!) at their Pheasant Restaurant!

We got a real workout walking for hours thru the Korean countryside, with our guide's trusty pointer rustling up birds for us. It was beautiful and fascinating, especially for me, as this was my first time in Korea, as well as hunting with Dan! And Dan, as you can see from the photo, was very pleased with his catch! A truly WONDERFUL day! (I also posted our "honeymoon" story with more pix of this hunting day, and our amazing apres-hunt pheasant lunch, on our blog: southernwestvirginia.blogspot.com).
